That familiar twinge in your lower back after a run can be frustrating—especially when you're trying to stay fit. While lower back pain is less common than leg injuries among runners, it remains a frequent complaint, affecting roughly 2.7% to 4.5% of runners depending on the distance. The good news? Most causes are fixable with the right approach. Here are 11 reasons your back hurts after running—and exactly what to do about each.


1. Repetitive Impact Stress

Running involves thousands of foot strikes per mile, each sending impact up through your legs and spine. This cumulative stress can irritate your vertebrae, discs, and the surrounding muscles. The result? A dull ache that builds over time.

The fix: Consider softer surfaces occasionally. Grassy areas, dirt trails, or tracks absorb more shock than pavement. Also, ensure you're not ramping up mileage too quickly—increase distance gradually to let your body adapt.

2. Weak Core Muscles

Your core isn't just about abs—it includes deep muscles that stabilize your pelvis and spine. When these are weak, your pelvis tilts out of neutral, forcing your lower back to take on extra load. Think of your core as the foundation of a house; weak foundations affect everything above.
