There was little debate about Hadi Chopan winning the 2022 Mr. Olympia title, but fans may be curious as to what exactly it was that put the Iranian on top against former Olympia 212 champion Derek Lunsford.
Terek L. Guindy is an IFBB Pro League judge, and is the host of both Primetime Muscle and Olympia TV. He hosted a recent episode of the latter show to explain why Shepherd can now add his name to the list of 17 men who have won bodybuilding’s biggest honors.
“He got bigger, that was the first impression of all the judges – that he was bigger than last year,” El Guinde said. “Also, Hadi Chopan showed the same conditioning he’s had in the last two years. He was already a great poser, and he poses with a lot of conditioning.
As for Lunsford, El Guinde explained that the only thing the runner-up needed to compete in the World Bodybuilding Championships was more time.
“He’s bigger than when he was at 212, his conditioning was impeccable, he actually has a smaller waist than Hadi Chopan, and he probably even beat Hadi Chopan in some poses. Joe Lunsford didn’t have those deep cuts that come from muscle maturation,” he shared. “And yes, Hadi has the Shepherd.
Those deep cuts (Lunsford) If he wants to compete with a competitor who has been training for decades, he’s going to have to get those deep cuts.
El Guinde also offered some insight to third-place finisher Nick Walker, who defeated two previous Mr. Olympia winners – Big Rami and Brandon Curry – in the competition.
“He’s an unstoppable force. He’s big, he’s conditioned, and he’s just getting better and better. It feels like Nick Walker is going to win the Mr. Olympia at some point in the future… Nick has to do it.” He’s a better poser, making his physique more aesthetically pleasing to beat guys like Derek and Hadi.
